Being in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are the reverse and so our winter is Chile's summer. The season for travelling in Patagonia is therefore October to April, which equates to spring through autumn.

October brings spring flowers and the awakening of the park's lodges after their long hibernation, with relatively low visitor numbers. Early November also presents a nice window of opportunity to have a bit more of Torres del Paine to yourself before the crowds begin to build up. November is a famously windy month though, so do bring a spare hat.

Some 300,000 tread their way around the famous trails of Torres del Paine each year and the vast majority fetch up here during January and February. Pathways can become a bit clogged and viewpoints crowded. So we work with specialist lodges on the fringes of the park where you can balance the 'must see' sights with the quieter corners that get you a bit closer to the sense of open space, wilderness and majesty that we love about this great national park

March and April bring autumnal colours to close the main season, with visitor numbers tailing off. Days are still long, the wind abates and temperatures hold fairly steady. It's also a fair bit cheaper to visit at the start of spring or in April, so your money works a bit harder for you. All in all, a lovely time to visit.

As a tailormade holiday we can adjust things to suit you prior to your departure. There is also much of this trip where it is up to you to set the pace. There is plenty of opportunity to get out walking on this holiday but equally, if all you wanted to do is sit and stare at the landscapes, it would remain a great trip.

At various stages in the journey, you have private guides who adjust activities to suit you. In Torres del Paine, you choose the activities that you want to do. Whilst you generally want to get out walking to make the most of your time, you can also mix this with vehicle-based discovery or more cultural activities around the estancia. Note that some of the walking in the national park can be quite demanding due to the more mountainous nature of much of the terrain.

You should expect 3-4* standard, but given how remote all of these places are, that generally feels very comfortable indeed. All are on the smaller side so you will always have a strong sense of place

You have a mix of private and shared coach transfers, plus all internal flights and airport transfers. You do not do any of the driving on this trip - we take care of that for you.

No. You're travelling through a part of Patagonia which is very well setup for tourists. Apart from the odd bit of awkward language gymnastics in local restaurants, you'll be fine.

This part of Patagonia is not necessarily the part you would choose if local culture and flavour is an important factor for you. Whilst you stay in towns such as Puerto Natales or El Calafate, you'll find that these are primarily geared up for tourism.

In general, the land in the south was divided up into huge parcels of land and given to early European settlers. This means you don't get the small communities and villages that you experience further north in Patagonia, going more off the beaten track. So whilst you will have some exposure to the sheep-rearing way of life, it's a trip more aimed at the remarkable landscapes than at local colour.
