We love driving in Spain because of the freedom it gives you. That could mean choosing which walk you want to do each day, how long to spend at each place you visit or simply pulling over at the side of the road to soak in a view you might otherwise have sailed straight past. It allows you to explore more locally, at a pace to suit you.

As the roads are generally quiet, smooth and scenic, it's designed to be a pleasurable part of the experience, rather than a price to pay for said freedom.

It's important to say that our driving holidays are not simply about the driving. The emphasis is on discovery, allowing you to get out and about to places you cannot reach by public transport, or which would quickly rack up costs by taxi.

On many of the trips above you either start or end in a major city. Usually, there's no need for you to have a vehicle there, unless you are passing through on a longer trip or arriving/departing from a different airport. So the normal thing is to pick up the vehicle on the morning you leave the city, or drop it off on arrival if it's at the end of your trip.

You might therefore only have a car for four out of seven days. Of course if you are staying longer then you'll have the car for the duration of your trip. Either way, we don't expect you to use it every day.

When you are driving between hotels, you'll typically have a drive of 2-3 hours. Normally you'll break that up with some exploring or walking en route. So really it's a few bursts of shorter journeys. When you receive a detailed proposal, we tell you the distances involved each moving day.

On days when you are exploring from your hotel, you might have a short drive to a trailhead and back. Or you might use your car to spend the day exploring different villages. Often it'll just rest up at base, particularly if you are visiting vineyards or doing a circular walk. It's often the case that you simply choose when you're there - if you want a day off from driving, there are opportunities to do that.

So just to repeat, we find it helpful to think of these holidays as about active cultural discovery first and foremost. Your car is the way you get around, but it's not the be all and end all. It isn't just about driving round and watching the scenery roll past, though you'll inevitably have moments of that as you go - Spain is often spectacular from the roadside.

We firmly believe you need at least a week to get the most out of a road trip holiday to Spain. Anything else risks selling short the remarkable destinations we share. For a week or so, you would split your time between two, sometimes three, destinations, allowing you to explore slowly and more deeply at each. As we've said above, you might only need a car for one of those stops.

Our itineraries run from a week up to three weeks, most of which can easily be combined. Frankly, if you gave us three months we'd fill it with the most extraordinary immersion into Spanish landscapes, cultures, food and wine that you could wish for.

For two people travelling to Spain you can expect a medium-sized vehicle such as a VW Golf, though we can’t guarantee a specific make or model. We always look to provide a hybrid vehicle where available and a realistic option.

Automatics are usually available, just let us know if you prefer this option.

Some vehicles have sat nav built in, but we find the best way to navigate is simply to use Waze or Google Maps on your smartphones. These can both be used offline to avoid data charges and your phone can easily sync with your car's Bluetooth so that it talks to you through the radio. All in all, it's not really much different to navigating in a part of your own country you've not been to before.

UK clients do not need anything other than their UK licence.

For any clients not based in Europe or the UK, an international driving licence is officially required, but we don't know of any local office in Spain or Portugal that has requested to see it.
