Patagonia: an evening with the experts 2016
Pura Aventura started in Patagonia when Diego Martín and I met in Torres del Paine back in 1994. After six weeks hiking inside the park, I found myself with approximately enough money to buy a flight back to the Chilean capital, or (and here I really was guesstimating) enough money to feed myself as I hitchhiked the thousands of kilometres to Santiago, via Argentina, and they nearly completed Carretera Austral. Nothing ventured, nothing gained…
The landscapes I was treated to on that month long journey were extraordinary, exquisite. But that’s just one side of the story, it was the people who stayed with me. As it turned out, I didn’t really have enough money to feed myself for a month. The kindness of strangers was truly humbling again, and again.
I emerged from three months in Patagonia carrying a debt of gratitude which stays with me to this day, some 20 years later.
It is for this reason that we wanted to invest in an event which helps to convey some of the beauty, the history and the challenges of this extraordinary part of the world. So that’s what we are doing on 23rd June this year.
We have the splendid Bill Oddie coming to talk about conservation and wildlife in Argentina; Tuppence Stone , producer of the BBC's ‘Patagonia' series will talk about her time spent filming, and Bradt guide writer Hugh Sinclair will be discussing his experiences of the people of Patagonia.
It's all happening in the rather lovely surrounds of London's Royal Geographical Society, next to the Royal Albert Hall, on the evening of Thursday June 23rd. Doors open at 6pm.
Please do join us if you are able, I look forward to saying hello on the night, perhaps over a drink during the interval. And, by the way, I know not everyone lives within striking distance of London, if we could take it on tour, we would! However, we intend to record the event in order that it be available to all online subsequently.

The Pothole is Pura Aventura's popular monthly email. We share what we love, what interests us and what we find challenging. And we don't Photoshop out the bits everyone else does. We like to think our considered opinions provide food for thought, and will sometimes put a smile on your face. They've even been known to make people cry.
