People of Latin America
Just a few days before the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples (August 9th), Harvard University Medical School has made, an incredible discovery proving a genetic link between indigenous communities in the Amazon and Australasia!
In archaeology and genetics, there's a strong theory suggesting the first humans came to America by crossing the Bering land bridge about 15,000 years ago in a single or probably a double migration. But this new finding potentially indicates an ancient migration coming directly from Australasia.
Latin American has an incredible complexity of communities as expressed in the diversity of culture, art forms, architecture and languages found on the continent even today. However, it is these mysterious Amazon ancestors, called 'Population Y,' after the Tupí word for ancestor, 'Ypykuéra' who keep on surprising us.
Watch this space for updates on the findings but in the meantime, we take advantage of this special occasion to introduce you with our portrait gallery of just a few of Latin America's people.
