Christmas Carols from Spain and Latin America
By Christmas in Spain is a time of decorations, nativity scenes, street lighting, joy and a generally festive atmosphere. One of the most popular traditions during the Christmas season are 'Villancicos de Navidad' or Christmas Carols, sung at parties with families and close friends.
Do take note that in Spain and most of Latin America, presents are traditionally exchanged by Christians during Three Kings' Day (Epiphany) on January 6th rather than December 25th.
Originating from the middle Ages, 'Villancicos' (coming from the word villa, meaning city) gained importance during the Renaissance and Baroque period, times when religion was particularly significant.
Today in Spain, you'll hear some of the same Christmas carols you already know in English as they have the exact same melody, but the lyrics won't be the same ' whilst the stories are similar most of the time, the lyrics aren't literal translations.
