7 resolutions in Spanish for 2018

Another year has just begun. As soon as the bells ring midnight on December 31, many people reflect on everything that happened over the last 365 days and make plans on how to improve things…
We all promise ourselves a number of things when it comes to making New Year’s resolutions. The new year offers us an opportunity to make a change for the better.
Although, while most people’s resolutions often refer to giving something up (whether that’s chocolate, alcohol, or cigarettes), why not make this year’s resolutions something more positive and constructive?
Here we have pulled together a list of 7 realistic resolutions that might just make your life a little happier over 2018.
Comer saludable
While losing weight might be the most common resolution you hear every year, it generally doesn’t take more than a couple of months before you forget about going to the gym. So instead, how about following a ‘real’ Mediterranean diet which basically consists of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, olive oil and features fish and poultry over red meat. Research suggests that the benefits of following a Mediterranean-style eating pattern may be many: improved weight loss, better control of blood glucose (sugar) levels and reduced risk of depression, to name a few. Here is a great book.
Aprender español
Many of us aim to learn something new each year. Although you might already speak some Spanish, improving your skills is also a great resolution. But as not all of us have a Spanish speaker on hand every day to practice it properly, an easy option is to learn five new words every day . Five words doesn’t seem like a lot, but if you manage five words every day you’ll have learned 75 new words by the end of January. It’s a good idea to learn new vocabulary in groups of meaning – five new verbs related to cooking, for example, or five synonyms for happy.
Tomar más vino
I know some people that are choosing to ban or reduce alcoholic drinks this coming year. But that’s just not us. That would be unrealistic indeed. Instead we suggest to drink - responsibly - more wine from the Spanish-speaking countries: Spain, Argentina, Chile, Mexico… Give a different region a try each time you buy a bottle - by the end of the year you will have greatly improved your wine knowledge. Wine lovers will enjoy this blog piece we wrote about Latin America’s lesser known wine regions as well as this brief guide to the Spanish wine regions.
Leer más libros
This year, become a Spanish bookworm! Read the authors of the Latin American Boom, Argentinian poetry or even the Spanish classics like Don Quixote. Yes, Cervantes' novel about the The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha is hundreds of pages long. Yes, it’s a serious piece of literature. And yes, most Spaniards have never actually read it. But the story of this genius/fool on a personal crusade to bring back chivalry is also seriously fun. So whether you read it in English or Spanish, just read it.
Viajar más
In 2018 make you the promise to visit a Spanish-speaking country. Get off the beaten track and start exploring some of Spain and Latin America’s little visited regions. Take a trip to the stunning Carretera Austral or visit Peru’s most remote corners. Or you could check out some of the places dubbed the Most Beautiful Towns in Spain in a ranking this year. Just whip out the nearest handy world map, call our travel experts and book your holiday!
Leer noticias
This year, make an effort to keep up with current events in the Spanish-speaking world by reading a Spanish newspaper at least once a week. If reading it in Spanish is a stretch though, an easy and enjoyable way to follow what's happening in Spain and Latin America is by subscribing to the Pura Weekly here. Once a week, we compile a round up of all the best Spanish and Latin American news from the web.
Cultivarse
A great way to learn more about Spanish culture at the same time as improving your skills, is listening to podcasts. Podcasts are great because they can fit nicely around other tasks – you can listen to a podcast while getting ready for bed, or cooking. It can also help you to feel more connected to the culture and people from Spanish-speaking countries. We recommend sticking with at least one podcast per week. Notes in Spanish and Podcasts in Spanish are two of our favourites!
